Practical workshop on DIN 35255 (language: german): How to successfully implement it in your company

The publication of DIN 35255 marks the first independent standard for the quality-oriented development of fibre composite components. It closes an important gap in quality management and places new demands on companies that develop, design and manufacture composite structures. To provide targeted support for the transfer into operational practice, Fraunhofer IFAM is offering a two-day workshop in March 2026. In this interview, Stefan Simon explains the objectives of the standard, how companies can benefit from its application – and what participants can expect from the workshop.

Why was DIN 35255 developed and what gap does it fill in the practical work of companies that use fibre composites?

DIN 35255 was developed to define requirements for the quality-oriented development of fibre composite components and to supplement the existing quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001. It closes the gap that composite products cannot be fully verified by subsequent tests, which often results in inadequate safety standards. This standard promotes error prevention and ensures both product and process safety throughout the entire life cycle of fibre composite components.

What challenges typically arise when implementing the standard in operational practice?

When implementing DIN 35255, companies face the challenge of integrating new requirements into their existing QM systems. In particular, training specialist personnel and adapting internal processes are often time-consuming. However, it is an advantage that DIN 35255 is based on the requirements of the well-known adhesive technology standards and therefore often significantly simplifies integration.

In addition, companies must ensure that the new standards in the areas of design, production planning and logistics are understood and implemented.

What exactly can participants expect from the workshop and how does the format help them to implement the requirements of DIN 35255 in their own companies?

In the workshop, participants can expect a practical introduction to DIN 35255, supported by concrete examples from industry. The content is based on many years of experience in related areas of operational certification. Participants will learn how to integrate the requirements of the standard into their operations, both in quality management and in other areas.

How does the workshop support the transfer to the individual company context – for example, through examples, exercises or the exchange of experiences?

The workshop offers the optional opportunity to hold confidential discussions with the speakers on the second day of the workshop. Participants can bring up specific questions, which will then be discussed together. In addition, the speakers are available for individual discussions on specific questions regarding company certification and personnel qualification in order to develop practical solutions.

For whom is the workshop particularly relevant and what prior knowledge should participants have?

The workshop is aimed at specialists and decision-makers in companies that work with fibre composites and want to expand their quality management systems. Participants should have a basic knowledge of composite technology and an understanding of quality management in order to be able to effectively classify and apply the content.

DIN 35255 is of central importance for the further development of the industry, as it creates a uniform basis for quality and safety in the field of fibre composite technology. In an international context, the standard strengthens the competitiveness of European companies and promotes the exchange of best practices. Standards such as these are crucial for ensuring the long-term innovation and safety of the composite industry.
