Transversal modules are targeted at technical specialists.
Objectives You will be able to identify and differentiate the steps involved in developing lightweight products, and to design, construct and set up processes with specific lightweight material in the correct way to fully utilize the lightweight potential.
Course Duration 3 days each module + e-learning course

Exceptionally, the introductory module will be held in 2019 in Italian (Italy), Spanish (Spain), English (Belgium) and German (Germany).
Course contents Lightweight construction guidelines, lightweight materials, cost- and life cycle –assessment methodologies, specialized instruction on different lightweight materials and additional transversal perspectives to the lightweight materials
How the course is organized T-shaped professional structure. Introductory module (basic level), material modules (advanced level) and transversal modules (expert level)
Certification Certified professional training course according to EN ISO 17024.
The certificates confirm that successful courses participants have acquired expertise and practical knowledge in the relevant area.
Certification requirements Basic level: participation in the introductory module and successful examination
Advanced level: participation at least in four material modules and successful examinations
Expert level: participation at least in four transversal modules and successful examinations
Course fee Basic Level Modules: 1200 € + 195 € optional examination fee
Advanced Level Modules: 1250 € + 215 € optional examination fee

Basic Level

Introductory Module

You will learn how to identify and differentiate the crucial steps for the development of a lightweight product, from the initial requirement list and the general solutions to the overall design and product documentation.


Advanced Module

Fiber reinforced plastics

This module provides the participant an overview of the whole lifecycle of a fiber reinforced plastic product, emphasizes its peculiarities from the material selection to the recycling and repairing.

Advanced Module

Aluminium light alloys

In this module, you will learn the excellent lightweight potential of Aluminium and its alloys, which can be exploited into industrial components thanks to high variety of processing solutions.

Advanced Module

Cast irons

In this module, you will learn how a »conventional« material, such as Cast Iron, can become strategic for lightweight applications, thanks to innovative processes and treatments.

Polymers are among the most lightweight manufacturing materials currently available and, together with their applications, it makes them a powerful material for lightweight applications.

In this module, you will acquire knowledge of fundamental and technical issues related to steels, from their microstructure and phase transformation to their properties and lightweight applications.

Advanced Module

Magnesium / Powder metals

The participants will be provided with the best properties, applications and challenges of magnesium, the ninth most abundant element in the universe, and of other metal powders.

Reducing the weight of structures has in recent years become a critical point of focus for many different sectors, such as machine building, transportation and civil construction. The appropriate handling of materials in lightweight design structures is the key success factor for preserving resources and reducing costs. Unfortunately, practical experience often shows that designing and handling rules for new materials are not being respected.

The professional training concept underlying the »lightweight professional« courses address this issue.

Within these courses, industrial employees (managers as well as engineers and technical staff members) will not only obtain information, but also acquire the knowledge in a manner appropriate to their individual educational backgrounds.  Based on results from a recent Europe-wide survey, the content and the format of the »lightweight professional courses« are designed to meet industrial needs.

Lightweight professional courses aim to deliver high quality content and ready-to-use practical information. Participants will experience an open environment atmosphere with the opportunity to exchange experiences with other participants and industrial branches.

The courses follow the requirements of ISO EN 17024 and are certified by an external accreditation body.
