Proof Testing and Test Philosphies

Objectives of the module »Proof Testing and Test Philosphies«

The design of primary components in many cases requires experimental verification of the design safety. Adapted testing philosophies for safety verification are in particular required for new materials (e.g. FRPs) and for innovative designs/constructions. The objective of this module is to enable participants to answer the following questions:
How can prior damage be evaluated?
What damage is permissible?
What does damage tolerance mean and how is this taken into account in the verification process? How can non-destructive and destructive test methods be used here?

Required knowledge for participation and target groups

The realistic minimum requirements for taking this module are successful completion of the online introductory learning program or the Introductory Module. Participants must have taken the Base Modules of the Composite Engineer course. Also recommended, but not absolutely necessary, is completion of the "Material and product characterization" module of the Composite Engineer course. The target group for this module are employees who are responsible for fiber composite structures and components, namely engineers and scientists in all disciplines and industries as well as technicians and technologists with suitable professional experience and expertise. This module is targeted in particular at those already having knowledge of material and component testing.

Important information

Each module of the Composite Engineer course can be taken individually, regardless of whether or not you intend to take sufficient modules to be awarded a Composite Engineer certificate. An online introductory learning program is used to give participants the necessary prior knowledge. Participants are given the access code after registering for the module.

More specific modules are currently in development covering the fields of multi-material-design, ceramic based composite materials, short-fiber composites and production system design and evaluation methods.
