European Adhesive Bonder

The demands on modern products are ever increasing. Products must increasingly be smaller, lighter, and faster and must also meet environmental and economic criteria. Adhesive bonding technology is able to join metals, fiber reinforced plastics, alloys, and ceramics together to form functional products. In addition, the use of adhesives allows the integration of functionalities such as vibration damping, sealing, and corrosion protection.

One week course on the practical use of adhesive bonding technology

In order to benefit from adhesive bonding technology and acquire competitive advantages, it is vital that trained staff process and apply the adhesives in the correct way. Technical staff must understand the special features of adhesive bonding. Without this knowledge, serious errors and production problems can arise. The effectiveness of a bonded joint can be impaired by inadequate surface treatment, incorrect processing times, improper adhesive processing, and unsuitable ambient conditions. For this reason the top priority in adhesive bonding is quality assurance. Fraunhofer IFAM offers a one week European Adhesive Bonder course that trains technical users of adhesives to independently and effectively manufacture bonded joints.

Target group

The course is directed at employees who independently bond materials following work instructions, for example employees in companies that use or manufacture adhesives. Participants must have adequate knowledge of the course language to enable them to understand the course material and take the examinations.

Objectives of the training course

The course provides training for employees involved in industrial production. The course provides a fundamental knowledge of adhesive bonding so that the special aspects of adhesive bonding processes are understood and taken into account in the production. The training course gives the participants a clear understanding of the technical aspects and importance of work instructions and procedures. This knowledge allows them to effectively and independently carry out their work.

Introductory learning program

The computer-based introductory learning program introduces topics which will be covered in the actual course. The introductory learning program was developed to ease introduction to the theory and to refresh old knowledge. The introductory learning program can be studied at a any time and place which is convenient and allows customized preparation for those wanting to take the actual training course.

Examinations

The course ends with examinations (practical, written, oral). A prerequisite for taking the examinations is regular attendance at the course sessions.

Fundamental principles

The course starts by introducing fundamental aspects of adhesive bonding technology. Adhesive bonding is compared to other joining techniques. The integrity of bonded joints and the factors that influence the quality of a bonded joint are explained using the concepts of adhesion and cohesion. Participants acquire a fundamental understanding of the properties of adhesives.

Adhesives

In this section of the course the participants are familiarized with the most important types of adhesives used in industry and learn about the properties of those adhesives and their main uses. Emphasis is put on correct processing and on the curing conditions for different adhesive systems. Practical assignments consolidate these aspects.

Surface treatment

Customized surface treatment is vital if a bonded joint is to function correctly and have good long-term stability. The course introduces surface treatment techniques that are normally carried out by workers as a direct part of the bonding process. Practical assignments give participants experience applying these techniques to a variety of substrates. Particular emphasis is put on the use of primers and adhesion promoters.

Testing bonded joints

In the practical part of the course bonded joints are manufactured and are then tested using commonly used test procedures. Evaluation of the joint strengths and fracture patterns allows bonding defects and their effects to be recognized, so complementing the theoretical part of the course.

Manufacturing technology

The participants learn the principles of manual and machine-based production methods and learn to identify and avoid sources of errors.

Health and safety at work and environmental protection

Participants learn about the principles for recognizing potential dangers when working with adhesives and auxiliary materials used in bonding processes. The importance of using protective equipment and wearing protective clothing is highlighted.
